Star Trek: TNG - “In Theory”

filed under Star Trek, The Next Generation by thedorkygirl @ 11:36 pm

“In Theory” is hilarious and thoughtful both — should Data date? lols ensue! — but my favorite part is when Riker is shown as the manslut he really is. *dies* It topped my previous favorite part shown only a scene prior of Worf warning Data about hurting the lieutenant under his command if he chose to persue (or not persue? o.O) a romantic relationship.

But srsly, manslut Riker is the best.

Bionic Woman - Sisterhood

So I take it back about Bionic Woman being tedious. The third episode, “Sisterhood,” picks up the pace somewhat — or maybe it’s the fact that it focuses on Sarah Corvus. Katee Sackhoff plays a character that is markedly similar yet markedly distinguished from her Galactica char.

I hope they realize what a gold mine this whole Sarah Corvus character is, especially as Sackhoff’s very presence makes Michelle Ryan try harder to — to what? Get in character? Perhaps it’s just that their chemistry together as actors cackles with electricity. Sexual or nonsexual, however one sees it, Jaime and Sarah play well together.

Katee Sackhoff is always one to play crazy like crazy.

stop smoking for school

filed under stop smoking for school by thedorkygirl @ 9:28 pm

Stop smoking, send your kid to college.

No, seriously.

Let’s say that you put back one hundred dollars a month for eighteen years into a savings account for your kid’s college expenses. Without interest, your total is $21,600.

Let’s say you smoke a pack a day. Forgetting leap years, because they’re a bother, a pack a day at five dollars a pack over eighteen years is $32,850.

Even if you smoke a pack a day but buy by the carton, forty-dollar, ten pack cartons at a pack a day (three cartons a month) for eighteen years is still $25,920.

Now, seriously, stop smoking and send your kid to college.

I’ve been a smoker for two years, but it’s time for me to quit now, before I get sick, before I have kids to worry about, before I spend even more money than I have. I bet I’ve spent a figure just below fifteen hundred dollars on cigarettes. In two years! I’m twenty, do you know how many shoes that is?

Smoking is a poor man’s vice and a rich man’s fancy, but the ones hurt most are the kids — the ones who start smoking and the ones who don’t even realize that their college expenses are burning up right before them.

Moms, dads, if you can’t do it for yourself, do it for your kids. Does that sound snobby and overbearing, especially coming from a smoker? Just ask yourself why you can’t save a hundred dollars a month for your kid but can afford your cigarettes.

PoTC theme

filed under lj to wordpress by thedorkygirl @ 11:32 am

I found an awesome Pirates of the Carribean theme at themecritic.com. For all those fandom hussies out there, this one’s calling you for an easy implementation for your new WordPress site.

Great use of images to catch your eye with post titles & with categories in the sidebar, and a beautiful Jack Sparrow banner at the top. The colors are complementary and easy to read. I hope somebody likes it and uses it!

Cloaking URLs, edit.php?page=2 is broken

filed under site development by thedorkygirl @ 11:20 am

When you cloak your WordPress URL in the latest few updates, the page two on the manage posts area is going to give you the wrong URL and show up a 404 page. The only thing to do is manually edit your link to get to the next page.

Wish I’d known that before I went through and deleted every post of Karmacon, looking for a buggy post! Next time, I’ll just google the URL giving me trouble.

Time to look for some quick layouts to use as placeholders while I figure out the new tagging system.

Theme Generator

filed under lj to wordpress by thedorkygirl @ 11:55 am

Found via Weblog Tools Collection, a WordPress Theme Generator for those who aren’t up to the task of editing a theme for themselves quite how they want to. Create the theme with a live preview, then download the zip file and upload the theme into your WordPress theme’s directory.

Probably handy for people who want to combine elements from this theme with one they already like by viewing the code for help. 2.3 compliant & now with tags & tag clouds.

LJ-similar themes

filed under lj to wordpress by thedorkygirl @ 11:52 am

I just found a theme very reminiscent of a common livejournal layout. It looks like it’s as easily (and more) customizable as the standard LJ layout.

Deviant by hotse.com

Simple, 3 Column layout. Header area contains title & banner spot (currently empty). Just beneath is a band of color with links such as “home” and “about.” Footer contains the necessary homage to Wordpress & the credit for the theme link.

Body columns
Categories, archive link, calendar view on the left.
Content in the middle.
Tags, blogroll/links, meta content/links, and search on the right.

important update lesson: have the time

filed under lj to wordpress, site development by thedorkygirl @ 8:20 pm

I just ran into a big problem when I updated to WordPress version 2.3 — they’ve now integrated tags into their core, and I don’t have the time available tonight to edit my theme to include the WP default codes and investigate how import from the Ultimate Tag Warrior plugin.

What’s that mean? My tags don’t work. The two tagging systems are battling for supremacy, & WP is winning, but UTW is already coded into the theme. Lesson learned: always do upgrades when you’ve got the time. :-D
